Chapter 7 - The Final Stand

The breach was not a sound; it was a feeling. A vibration in the floor, a shattering of iron, the roar of gunfire.

Vincent and his men fought like demons. Ruby stayed in the safe room, holding Leo, reading to him, their voices a quiet, steady rhythm against the cacophony of war outside.

She knew that if they lost, there would be no mercy.

She stood up, walked to the heavy safe in the corner, and pulled out a small handgun she had hidden away weeks ago. She had practiced with it every day, not for the sake of violence, but for the sake of survival.

When the door to the safe room finally flew open, she didn't hesitate. She fired once, twice, three times, clearing the threshold.

Vincent burst in, followed by the rest of his security detail. He saw the bodies, saw Ruby standing over Leo, her hair disheveled, her face streaked with dirt and blood.

He had never seen anyone more beautiful.
