Years later, the Romano estate was known throughout Chicago not as a fortress, but as a place of refuge.
Vincent had retired, and they had moved to a quieter house, a place with a big garden and no gates.
Leo was a young man now, strong and kind, heading off to college.
Ruby and Vincent were sitting on their porch, watching the sun set over the city skyline.
“Do you ever miss it?” Vincent asked. “The power?”
“The power?” Ruby laughed. “I have more power now than I ever did then. I have the power to live. The power to love. The power to be exactly who I am.”
Vincent looked at her, and he knew it was true.
