Chapter 5 - The Downfall of an Empire

Three days after the gala, Michael DeLuca sat in his penthouse office overlooking the Chicago skyline, swirling a glass of scotch. His phone buzzed incessantly. Stock prices for DeLuca Atlantic Logistics were plunging. Anonymous regulatory complaints had triggered a federal audit into the company's founding assets. Worst of all, his major investors were pulling out overnight.

The double doors of his office burst open. Vanessa rushed in, looking frantic.

"Michael, look at the news! Federal marshals are freezing our accounts. They’re claiming the original capital for the logistics network was acquired through fraud and coercion!"

Michael stood up, his face draining of color. "Fraud? Who filed this? Whose name is on the injunction?"

Before Vanessa could answer, the private elevator chimed. The doors slid open, revealing two federal agents flanked by a frail, sharp-eyed woman wearing a familiar silver falcon bracelet on her wrist. Behind them walked Natalie, dressed in a simple trench coat, holding her discharge papers in one hand and her newborn son resting securely in a carrier against her chest.

Michael stepped back, his scotch glass slipping from his fingers to shatter against the hardwood floor.

"Hello, Michael," Natalie said softly, stepping into the office she had once helped him build from nothing. "You told your guests I was a cheap toy you forgot to throw away."

She stepped aside as Lucia Bellini walked forward, locking eyes with the terrified mafia boss.

"You forgot," Natalie continued, her voice echoing in the silent penthouse, "that toys aren't the only things you can throw away. Sometimes, garbage takes out the trash."
