Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The ballroom of Chicago’s Lakefront Crown Hotel buzzed with the manufactured joy of high-stakes capitalism. Three hundred guests—investors, bankers, and sycophants—mingled under crystal chandeliers, celebrating a decade of DeLuca Atlantic Logistics. At the center of it all stood Michael DeLuca, tailored to perfection, his arm draped around his mistress, Vanessa Romano.

Natalie DeLuca stood near the shadows of the banquet hall. At seven months pregnant, her body ached, but her exhaustion was nothing compared to the public humiliation she had just endured. When a board member asked about Michael’s wife, Vanessa had dismissed her as a kitchen-bound relic. Instead of defending her, Michael had publically labeled her a cheap toy he had forgotten to discard.

Ten years earlier, Natalie had worked grueling twelve-hour nursing shifts to finance his first warehouse while eating out of a hot plate in a freezing office. Now, standing beneath a wall of white roses, she felt her unborn son kick against the betrayal.

Without a word, Natalie stepped forward, slid her diamond wedding ring off her swollen finger, and dropped it into Michael’s champagne flute. The splash was tiny, but the silence that followed swallowed the entire room.

"Since I’m just a cheap toy," she said, her voice cutting through the quiet like glass, "you won’t mind if somebody finally throws me away."

Michael blinked, the alcohol in his veins momentarily overpowering his common sense. "Natalie, don’t create a scene."

"You created it," she replied.

She turned and walked out of the ballroom, leaving three hundred people paralyzed in her wake. In the elevator, her knees trembled, and a sharp, familiar pain coiled low in her abdomen. Her doctor, Maya Ellis, had warned her repeatedly that severe chronic stress could trigger premature labor. Yet Michael had forced her here, claiming investors preferred family men.

Her phone buzzed in her palm. An unknown number flashed across the screen with a stark warning: DO NOT GO HOME. THEY’RE WAITING FOR YOU.
