Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the Cloakroom

The restored footage did not jump.
At 14:25:13, a figure entered the corridor leading to the staff cloakroom. It was not Grace.
It was Eleanor’s personal maid, a quiet, middle-aged French woman named Therese, who had been in Eleanor's service for nearly fifteen years. Therese looked nervous, her eyes darting toward the security camera—the visible one—unaware of the pinhole lens hidden inside the frame of the antique portrait opposite her.
Therese entered the cloakroom. She carried a small, velvet jewelry pouch.
Ten seconds later, she emerged, the pouch gone, her hands empty. She walked quickly back toward Eleanor’s private suite.
"My, my," Julian whispered, a slow, malicious grin spreading across his face. He loved family drama, especially when it didn't involve his own debts. "It seems Mother's faithful hound has been playing dirty."
"Therese would never," Eleanor said, though her voice lacked its earlier steel. Her eyes were wide, staring at the screen as if she could burn the digital pixels away with her gaze. "She must have been returning something... or perhaps she found it elsewhere and—"
"Alexander," a soft voice broke in.
Everyone turned.
Standing in the doorway of the drawing room was a tall, elegant woman in her late twenties. Charlotte Whitmore, Alexander’s estranged wife. She wore a silk emerald dress, her blonde hair perfectly coiffed, her fingers dripping with diamonds. She had moved out of the master suite six months ago, living in the east wing of the massive house while their lawyers drafted a highly contentious divorce settlement.
Charlotte looked at the screen, then at the bracelet in Eleanor's hand, and finally at Grace.
"What is going on here?" Charlotte asked, her voice laced with a cold, lazy amusement. "Is there a trial occurring in my house without my invitation?"
"It’s not your house, Charlotte," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a register that made even the security guards shift uncomfortably. "And the trial is already over."
He looked at the guards. "Release Miss Ellison. And bring Therese to my study. Now."
The guards hesitated, looking at Eleanor for confirmation, but Alexander’s glare was so terrifyingly absolute that they bowed their heads and immediately stepped away from Grace.
Grace took a long, trembling breath, her shoulders dropping. She looked at Alexander, her eyes filled with a mixture of profound relief and something else—an intense, quiet curiosity.
"Miss Ellison," Alexander said, his tone softening imperceptibly as he addressed her. "Please return to the nursery. Ensure the girls are asleep. I will speak with you shortly."
"Yes, Mr. Whitmore," Grace whispered. She did not look at Eleanor or Charlotte as she slipped out of the room, her movements graceful and silent.

Once the door closed behind her, Alexander turned to his family.
"Now," he said, pulling off his damp overcoat and tossing it onto the velvet sofa. "Let’s talk about why my mother is trying to frame my daughter’s nanny."
