Chapter 10 - The First Steps of the Rest of Their Lives

The winter in London arrived with a crisp, biting cold, but inside the Kensington townhouse, the fireplaces were blazing, throwing a warm, golden light over the drawing room.

It was Christmas Eve.

A massive pine tree stood in the corner, decorated with hundreds of tiny white lights and silver ornaments. Clara and Iris were running circles around the base of the tree, their laughter filling the high-ceilinged room with a music that had been missing for far too many years.

Alexander stood by the window, a glass of champagne in his hand, watching his daughters.

He felt a soft presence beside him. He turned to see Grace, wearing an elegant, dark green velvet dress that made her gray eyes look like deep pools of slate. She had officially resigned as the family’s housekeeper two months ago, taking a position as the director of a new, state-of-the-art pediatric therapy center that Alexander’s charitable foundation had built in East London.

But she had not left the house.

"They are beautiful, aren't they?" Grace whispered, looking at the girls.

"They are," Alexander said, setting his glass down on the window sill.

He turned to face her, his hands reaching out to gently take her fingers. They were warm, soft, and no longer trembling.

"I spent my whole life believing that control was the only way to keep things safe, Grace," Alexander said, his dark eyes searching her face. "I built walls of glass, steel, and money. But the only thing that actually saved my daughter was a woman who was brave enough to stand barefoot on my floor and teach her how to trust the ground."

Grace looked up at him, a soft, beautiful smile touching her lips. "The ground was always solid, Alexander. You just needed someone to show you how to stand on it."

Alexander leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a quiet, deep kiss that seemed to seal the end of the long, cold winter and the beginning of a life that was finally, truly theirs.

Beside the Christmas tree, Iris stopped running. She looked over at her father and Grace, a giant grin spreading across her small, bright face. She took Clara's hand, and together, the two sisters took three giant, happy steps toward their new family.
