Chapter 2 - The Deleted Seconds

The silence in the drawing room grew heavier, suffocatingly so, as Alexander connected his phone to the large, frame-style television mounted above the credenza.

Julian sat up slightly, his drink pausing halfway to his mouth. Eleanor’s hand dropped to her side, her fingers tightening around the diamond bracelet until the metal edges pressed deep into her skin.

"Alexander, really," Eleanor scoffed, trying to maintain her dismissive tone. "Since when do you micro-manage the domestic staff's petty crimes? We have security managers for this."

"I manage what is mine, Mother," Alexander replied, his voice flat.

He swiped his thumb across the screen, bringing up the localized camera system of the Kensington house. He bypassed the standard user interface, entering his private administrative bypass code. He had installed these cameras himself, secretly, using a proprietary, military-grade encryption network designed by his own firm. Not even his head of estate security knew the true extent of the system's capabilities.

He opened the archive for the "Staff Cloakroom - Corridor Entrance."

The screen flickered to life. The footage was crisp, high-definition digital black-and-white. The time-stamp in the corner read 14:22:15—exactly two hours before Alexander’s arrival.

On screen, the hallway leading to the cloakroom was empty. Then, Grace appeared, holding a tray with a small porcelain bowl and a bottle of milk. She walked toward the kitchen, disappearing from the frame.

Three minutes passed.

Suddenly, the screen jumped. The time-stamp skipped from 14:25:12 to 14:27:45.

Two minutes and thirty-three seconds of footage were missing.

"That's odd," Julian remarked, squinting at the screen. "A glitch?"

"My servers do not glitch, Julian," Alexander said, his eyes narrowing. "They are backed up across three independent cloud nodes. If footage is missing from the local hub, it means someone with administrative access manually deleted it within the last hour, hoping the system would overwrite the cache before I returned."

He turned his gaze slowly toward his brother. "And only three people in this house have the administrative password to the primary security console."

Julian’s face flushed an angry, mottled red. "Are you accusing me? I was at my club in Mayfair until four o'clock! Check my GPS, check the club register!"

"I don't need to check your GPS, Julian," Alexander said. He tapped his phone again, initiating an administrative recovery protocol. "When a file is deleted from the local drive, the off-site server keeps a shadow copy for seventy-two hours. It takes exactly ninety seconds to retrieve."

The room was so quiet that the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner sounded like hammer blows.

Grace stood completely frozen, her eyes wide as she watched Alexander’s fingers move with lethal precision over the screen.

Eleanor’s posture seemed to sag, just a fraction of an inch, her aristocratic composure beginning to crack like cheap lacquer. "Alexander, this is a waste of time. Even if there is a gap in the footage, the fact remains that the bracelet—"

"The recovery is complete," Alexander interrupted.

He pressed play.
