Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

Nathan groaned, the breath knocked completely from his lungs. His ribs screamed in agony, and blood dripped from a gash on his forehead.

Through his blurred vision, he saw the fourth and final mercenary standing over him, aiming a silencer-equipped pistol directly at his head.

"You should have stayed in London, Mr. Harrington," the man said smoothly, raising the weapon.

BANG.

A sharp, deafening report echoed through the courtyard. The mercenary’s eyes went wide, a neat red hole appearing in the center of his chest. He collapsed sideways, revealing Victoria standing at the top of the courtyard stairs, holding the tactical pistol Nathan had dropped earlier. Her hands were shaking violently, but her gaze was locked on the fallen man.

She had saved his life. But as Nathan pushed himself up from the shattered clay and dirt of the planter, the silence that followed was suffocating.

The distant wail of sirens and the heavy chopping of helicopter blades filled the night air. The federal extraction team had arrived.

Nathan staggered up the stairs, bypassing Victoria completely. He ran into the panic room, embracing Leo and Maya, who were crying but unharmed, while Arthur sat in the corner, nursing a wounded shoulder but smiling in relief.

Nathan then walked back down to the study. He pulled Tommy out from under the desk, wrapping the boy in his own trench coat.
