Chapter 6 - The Counter-Attack

Nathan grabbed the shotgun. He looked at the unknown boy. "What's your name, son?"
The boy looked up, tears cutting through the grime on his face. "T-Tommy," he whispered.
"Tommy, I need you to stay under this desk. Do not move, no matter what you hear. Do you understand?" Tommy nodded, scrambling into the footwell of the heavy desk.
Nathan turned to Victoria. "If you want to earn even a shred of forgiveness, you hold this door. If anyone tries to get in, you use that syringe."
Without waiting for her answer, Nathan unlocked the study door and threw it open, firing a deafening blast from the shotgun immediately into the hallway.
The lead mercenary took the blast directly to the chest, collapsing backward onto the marble floor. Nathan didn't hesitate. He dropped the empty shotgun, grabbed the fallen man’s tactical pistol, and moved like a shadow toward the grand staircase.
Another mercenary appeared at the landing above, aiming a rifle down at him. Nathan fired three rapid shots. The man stumbled, lost his footing, and tumbled down the sweeping spiral staircase, crashing into the foyer below.
Two down. Two remaining.
Nathan sprinted up the stairs, his heart hammering against his ribs. He reached the master suite just as the third mercenary was placing a breaching charge on the panic room door.

"Hey!" Nathan roared.
The mercenary turned, but Nathan was faster. He tackled the man over the balcony railing. The two men plummeted twenty feet down into the indoor courtyard below, crashing through a massive decorative planter.
