Chapter 2 - The Perfect Facade

Nathan stared at the woman he had married eight years ago. Victoria Vance, the daughter of a prestigious old-money dynasty, celebrated by Vogue and Forbes alike as the matriarch who balanced a billionaire husband, high-society philanthropy, and flawless parenting. It was all a lie.
"Insurance policy?" Nathan took a step forward, but Victoria raised the syringe defensively.
"Don't," she snapped. "One scratch from this, Nathan, and you'll be paralyzed before you hit the floor. Do you really think our lifestyle is funded solely by your tech investments? Do you think your sudden rise to the top of the financial world was just luck?"
Nathan’s mind raced. He had built his company, Apex Innovations, from a garage startup into a multi-billion-dollar empire. But looking at Victoria’s cold, calculating eyes, a dark realization began to dawn on him. The massive, anonymous venture capital influx that had saved Apex from bankruptcy six years ago—the funding that Victoria had proudly claimed to have "scouted" through her family connections—hadn't been clean money.
"Who does he belong to?" Nathan demanded, looking at the whimpering boy.
"He belongs to no one who matters," Victoria said coldly. "He's a ward of an underground surrogate registry. His blood, Nathan... his genetic markers are the only reason your liver hasn't failed you. Remember your miraculous recovery from advanced cirrhosis five years ago? The 'experimental German therapy' I arranged?"
Nathan felt the blood drain from his face. He remembered the private clinic, the secretive procedures, and the sudden, total restoration of his health. He looked at the boy's scarred arms.

"You didn't cure me," Nathan breathed, horror gripping his chest. "You've been harvesting biological material from black-market donors."
"I saved your life!" Victoria hissed, her composure cracking for a fraction of a second. "And in doing so, I tied us to the syndicate that provided him. But they want more now. They want Apex’s global logistics network to move their 'products.' If we don't comply, they expose my medical history for you, they expose the funding, and they destroy everything we built. This boy is the collateral they left behind to ensure our silence."
