Chapter 5 - The Reign of Elena Vargas

The top floor of the Vargas Tower was a palace of glass and chrome, looking out over the sprawling city skyline. Inside the main boardroom, the air was thick with tension. Isabel Vargas sat at the head of the long glass table, her face heavily made up to hide the exhaustion and panic underneath. Surrounding her were six older board members, all of them shifting nervously in their seats, looking at the empty chair where Jonathan Ambrose was supposed to be sitting.

"We don't need Ambrose to sign the contract," Isabel snapped, her voice sharp as she slammed her manicured hand on the table. "His proxies are here. We sign the merger papers now, and we transfer the funds before the bank closes at noon. Open the documents."

The corporate secretary hesitated, looking toward the heavy double doors at the back of the room. "But Mrs. Vargas, the Carranza group issued a formal block on our credit lines this morning. If we sign this without their approval, we are in immediate breach of—"

"I don't care about the Carranza group!" Isabel shouted, her mask completely slipping. "Sign the papers!"

Before the secretary could pick up a pen, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open with a slow, deliberate weight.

Every head in the room turned.

Elena Vargas walked into the room.

She looked unrecognizable. The torn silver dress and muddy bare feet were gone, replaced by a stunning, sharp-cut white power suit that emphasized her long, lean frame. Her brown hair fell in sleek, perfect waves around her shoulders, and the purple bruise on her cheek was completely gone, replaced by an aura of absolute, terrifying confidence.

And walking exactly half a step behind her, his hands in his pockets, his expression a mask of pure, predatory satisfaction, was Matthew Carranza.

Isabel stood up so fast her chair screeched against the hardwood. "Elena! What the hell are you doing here? Guards! Get her out of this room right now!"

Two security guards stepped forward, but before they could reach Elena, Matthew raised a single finger. From the hallway behind him, six heavily armed Carranza operators stepped into the doorway, their tactical gear and unyielding expressions instantly freezing Isabel’s men in their tracks.

"Sit down, Isabel," Elena said. Her voice wasn't loud, but it held a quiet, icy authority that made the older board members instantly sit up straight.

"You have no standing here, you ungrateful little bitch!" Isabel screamed, her fingers clawing at the edge of the table. "This is my company! Your father left it to me!"

Elena walked slowly to the head of the table, stopping right across from her stepmother. She reached into her leather portfolio and tossed a heavy, gold-embossed document onto the glass. It landed with a sharp, definitive slap.

"My father left it to me, Isabel," Elena said, her gray eyes flashing with the exact same fire as the man standing behind her. "As of midnight last night, I turned twenty-five. According to the original corporate charter—the one you tried so hard to hide—your temporary guardianship has officially expired. Controlling interest of seventy-two percent of Vargas Industries has reverted to my name."

Isabel shook her head frantically, looking at the board members for help, but every single one of them lowered their eyes, refusing to meet her gaze. "No... no, this is a fraud! The board won't accept this!"

"The board has already accepted it," Matthew chimed in smoothly, stepping forward to lean against the back of Elena’s new chair. "As the primary creditor holding ninety percent of your company's bad debt, Carranza Enterprises has already voted our shares in favor of the new CEO. Elena Vargas is now the sole authority in this building."

Isabel sank back into her chair, her body trembling violently as her entire world collapsed around her. "You think you've won? You think you can just throw me out? I raised you! I gave you a life!"

"You murdered my father," Elena said, her voice dropping into a chilling whisper that froze the blood of everyone in the room.

The double doors opened once more, and two federal agents in dark suits walked into the boardroom, followed by Sarah Jenkins.

"Isabel Vargas," the lead agent announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for first-degree murder, corporate espionage, and grand larceny. You have the right to remain silent."

Isabel screamed as the steel clicked around her wrists, her manicured nails scratching against the glass table as she was dragged out of the room, her curses echoing down the hallway until the heavy doors finally closed, cutting off her voice forever.

The boardroom fell into a profound, respectful silence.

Elena looked around the table at the remaining board members. They were terrified, waiting for the axe to fall. But Elena didn't shout. She slowly walked to the head of the table, pulling out the grand leather chair that had once belonged to her father, and sat down.

"Gentlemen," Elena said, a small, genuine smile finally touching her lips as she looked up at Matthew, who was watching her with an expression that looked remarkably like pride. "Let's review the new budget. We have a lot of work to do."

The storm had finally passed, the shadows had been driven out, and the legacy of the Vargas family was finally, beautifully, back in the hands of the girl who had survived the dark to claim the light.
