Chapter 4 - Unearthing the Inheritance

The study was quiet, save for the scratching of a fountain pen. Elena sat in a deep leather chair across from Matthew, surrounded by stacks of old corporate ledgers and legal documents that Sarah Jenkins, Matthew’s chief legal counsel, had spent the afternoon compiling.

"It’s worse than we thought, Daniel—sorry, Matthew," Sarah corrected herself quickly, sliding a thick file across the desk. "Isabel wasn't just trying to pay off her debts. She was actively trying to liquidate the entire Vargas estate before Elena’s twenty-fifth birthday. She knew the clause in the charter would strip her of everything."

Elena looked at the documents, her eyes scanning her father’s elegant, familiar signature at the bottom of the pages. "She told me my father died of a sudden heart attack. But these financial records... they show that large sums of money were being transferred to an offshore medical facility in Switzerland months before he passed away."

Matthew leaned back in his executive chair, his fingers steepled beneath his chin. His gray eyes were fixed on Elena, watching the realization dawn on her face.

"Your father didn't die of natural causes, Elena," Matthew said quietly. "Isabel was systematically poisoning him with low-grade arsenic over a period of eight months. We found the medical records from the Swiss clinic where he tried to seek treatment under an assumed name. He knew what she was doing, but he was too weak to fight her by the time he realized. That’s why he hid the true corporate charter with his personal attorney—the attorney Isabel had fired the day after his funeral."

A heavy, suffocating grief wrapped around Elena’s heart. She closed her eyes, a single tear escaping and rolling down her cheek. All those years she had blamed herself for not being strong enough, for not saving her father, when the entire time, she had been living under the roof of his murderer.

"She killed him," Elena whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of sorrow and a newfound, burning rage. "She killed him, and then she tried to sell me to the same men who helped her cover it up."

"Jonathan Ambrose’s chemical company supplied the materials," Matthew added, his voice tight. "That’s why she was forcing you into that room. Ambrose wanted you as a guarantee that you would never look into the company's past. If you were married to him, or compromised by him, your legal standing to sue them for your father's death would be entirely destroyed under state law."

Elena opened her eyes, the fear that had defined her life for the past two years suddenly evaporating, replaced by a cold, sharp clarity. She looked at Matthew, seeing him not as a terrifying predator anymore, but as the executioner her family had been waiting for.

"What do we need to do?" Elena asked, her voice steadying. "How do we stop them?"

Matthew stood up, walking around the massive desk until he was standing right beside her chair. He reached down, his large hand gently taking hers, lifting her up so she was standing eye-to-eye with him.

"Tomorrow is your twenty-fifth birthday, Elena," Matthew said, his gaze intense and unyielding. "The Vargas Industries annual board meeting is scheduled for ten o'clock in the morning downtown. Isabel thinks she is going to sign over the final controlling shares to Ambrose’s remaining partners. We are going to walk into that boardroom, and you are going to take your father's chair."

"And Isabel?" Elena asked, her jaw tightening.

"Isabel is going to learn that when you play a game with a Carranza," Matthew whispered, his thumb lightly brushing the back of her hand, "the loser doesn't just lose their money. They lose their freedom."
