Chapter 1 - The Spider and the Prey

The name on the glowing screen seemed to burn itself into Elena’s retinas. Isabel Vargas.
The very woman who had bruised her face, who had locked her in a room with a predatory old man, was currently flashing on the digital display of the stranger who had just offered her a lifeline. Panic, cold and absolute, seized Elena’s chest. Her fingers tangled into the expensive wool of Matthew Carranza’s coat, not out of comfort anymore, but out of a desperate, primal urge to find a weapon, an exit, anything.
"Let me out," she choked out, her voice cracking as she lunged toward the door handle. "You're with her. Oh my God, you're with her!"
Before her hand could grasp the chrome latch, a strong, iron-gloved hand clamped around her wrist. Matthew didn't yank her, but his grip was unyielding, anchoring her to the seat. His gray eyes, shifting from the rear window to her terrified face, held an emotionless calm that was deeply unsettling.
"Sit down, Elena," he said, his voice a low, commanding baritone that cut through the sound of the rain drumming furiously against the roof. "If you open that door at this speed, the asphalt will do more damage than your stepmother ever could."
"You know her!" Elena cried, struggling against his grip, tears mixing with the rainwater dripping from her hair. "She called you! You're bringing me right back to her!"
"I know of her," Matthew corrected coldly, his grip remaining firm until she finally stopped thrashing. He let go of her wrist slowly, but his gaze never left hers. "And she is currently calling me because she owes my firm forty million dollars. Debtors tend to ring their creditors when their grand schemes fall apart."
Outside, the blinding beams of the pursuing SUV flashed through the rear window, illuminating the cabin of the luxury sedan in stark, violent intervals. The driver, a broad-shouldered man named Lev, kept his hands perfectly steady on the wheel, navigating the winding, unlit back roads with practiced precision.
"They're closing in, boss," Lev reported smoothly, his eyes scanning the side mirrors. "It's Ambrose’s security detail. They know these roads better than we do."
Matthew didn't look back. He reached down, picked up his phone, and slid his thumb across the screen to decline Isabel's call. He immediately dialed a different number. "Marcus. I have a gray black SUV tailing my vehicle on the Old Mill ridge road. It belongs to Jonathan Ambrose. Intercept them. Do it quietly, and ensure they don't return to the Vargas estate tonight."
He ended the call without waiting for a reply and tossed the phone onto the leather seat between them.
Elena watched him, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She pulled his coat tighter around her shivering frame, her mind racing to piece together the fragments of the man sitting beside her. Matthew Carranza. The name suddenly clicked into place—a name spoken in hushed, fearful whispers in her stepmother’s study. He wasn't just a businessman; he was the head of Carranza Enterprises, a cutthroat financial titan who bought failing empires for breakfast and dismantled them by dinner. Isabel had been desperate for months, throwing lavish parties and seeking investors because the Carranza shadow was looming over the Vargas estate.
Suddenly, a loud, metallic crash echoed from behind them.
Elena flinched, looking back through the rain-streaked glass. Out of the darkness, two massive black armored trucks had materialized from a side trail, aggressively slamming into the sides of Ambrose's SUV. The pursuing vehicle swerved wildly, its tires losing traction on the flooded asphalt, before spinning out into a muddy ditch. Within seconds, the headlights of her captors vanished into the night, swallowed by the storm and Matthew's invisible army.
The silence that followed inside the car was suffocating.
Elena looked at Matthew, her breath hitching. "What... what are you going to do with me?"
May you like
Matthew turned his head, his sharp profile cutting through the shadows of the cabin. He looked at the ugly, darkening bruise on her delicate cheekbone, then down at her bleeding, bare feet.
"Your stepmother thought she could use you as collateral to pay off her debts to my family," Matthew said, his voice dropping into a chillingly quiet register. "She made a very poor business decision. Tonight, Elena, your value just shifted. You are no longer her bargaining chip. You are my guest."
