Chapter 6 - The Exit

The scene in the backyard degenerated into pure chaos.

Gloria was screaming at her daughter to call their lawyer, but her daughter was too busy looking at her phone, realizing that her own credit cards—which were supplementary cards on Graham’s business account—had just been declined.

Graham fell back into his chair, his head in his hands, staring at the half-eaten brisket on his plate. The "biggest step of his life" had become the public execution of his pride.

Hazel and Ruby came down the French doors, carrying their small backpacks. They looked at the shouting relatives, then at the sheriffs, their eyes wide.

I walked over to them, shielding them from the noise.

"Come on, girls," I said, taking their hands. "Our car is waiting."

"Are we going back to our real house, Mommy?" Ruby asked, her voice small but clear.

"Yes, baby," I said, glancing back one last time at the wreckage of the Ralston family. "And we are never, ever coming back here."

As we walked down the grand marble hallway toward the front door, Graham ran after us. His jacket was disheveled, his fake watch catching the hall light.

"Jocelyn! You can't just leave me like this!" he pleaded, standing in the doorway of the foyer. "We have a life together! We have a family!"

"I have a family, Graham," I said, without stopping. "You have a tradition. Enjoy it."
