Chapter 9 - The New Home

Six months later.
The Highland Park mansion had been sold to a tech entrepreneur from California. I didn't need the space, and I didn't want the memories of that backyard terrace.
Instead, I had purchased a quiet, historic estate in Southlake—a place with old oak trees, a massive wrap-around porch, and a yard where the grass grew thick and green.
It was Saturday afternoon. The sun was setting, casting a warm golden glow over the garden.
Hazel and Ruby were running through the yard, chasing a golden retriever puppy we had adopted after the move. Their laughter echoed off the brick walls of the house, a sound that filled every corner of my chest with a deep, unshakeable peace.
On the porch, a long wooden table was set for dinner.
There were no white linens, no silver trays, and no fake watches. There was just simple, beautiful stoneware, fresh flowers from the garden, and a massive platter of homemade pasta.

Daniel stood at the edge of the porch, holding a file. "The final transition of the Vance Properties corporate restructure is complete, Jocelyn. The girls’ educational trusts are officially locked until their twenty-fifth birthdays."
"Thank you, Daniel," I said, taking the file from him and placing it on the porch railing. "Go wash your hands. Dinner is almost ready."
