Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

Marcus wept openly as his fingers shook violently, fumbling with a magnetic key fob he pulled from his pocket. He scrambled across the concrete floor, inserting the key into the digital override panel beside the welded steel door of the cage.

Blink. Click.

The heavy steel door hissed as pneumatic seals released, swinging slowly outward.

Before the door was even fully open, Arthur dropped to his knees, ignoring the damp concrete, and crawled directly into the cage.

"Elena... my sweet girl," he choked out, his voice finally breaking as he carefully, tenderly gathered his daughter into his arms.

"Dad..." Elena gasped, tears spilling over her cheeks as she buried her face against his shoulder. "The baby... the baby is coming..."

"I know, sweetheart. I know. You're safe now. I've got you," Arthur murmured, kissing her forehead before looking up at the tactical team leader. "Get the medical van down the service driveway now. Call Dr. Alpert and tell him our private suite at St. Jude’s is prepped for emergency delivery."

"Right away, Boss," the operator barked into his comms mic.

As two medics rushed into the vault with a trauma stretcher, Arthur gently lifted Elena into their arms, walking beside her every step of the way as they carried her out of the subterranean nightmare and into the fresh night air.

As they passed through the utility room, Marcus was still kneeling on the floor, handcuffed behind his back, staring in utter horror at the men who had dismantled his life in less than three minutes.

"Arthur! Please!" Marcus cried out, scrambling forward on his knees. "We're family! You can't do this to me! I'll lose everything! The company, the house—!"

Arthur stopped.

He turned around slowly, looking down at Marcus the way a scientist might look at a particularly repulsive insect crawling across a laboratory floor.

"Family?" Arthur repeated, his voice dangerously quiet. "You locked my pregnant daughter in a cage. You starved her, abused her, and plotted her murder so you could steal her inheritance."

Arthur crouched down until his face was inches from Marcus’s terrified eyes.

"You didn't kidnap a woman no one would search for, Marcus," Arthur whispered. "You touched the only person on this earth that a retired kingpin would burn an entire empire to ashes to protect."

Marcus opened his mouth to scream, but no words came out.

"By sunrise," Arthur continued calmly, standing up and dusting off his overcoat, "your company will be liquidated, your bank accounts will be seized by federal asset forfeiture, your mistress will testify against you in exchange for immunity, and you will be transferred to a maximum-security federal penitentiary where your cell won't have locks—only bars."

He turned his back on Marcus forever.

"Take him away," Arthur ordered.

The two tactical operators hoisted Marcus up by his arms, dragging him kicking and screaming out through the front doors of the estate into the flashing red lights of the waiting convoy.
