Chapter 2 - The Sinking Ship

For forty-eight hours, the silence from above was psychological torture.

Elena lay on the concrete, drifting in and out of consciousness as a low-grade fever began to set in from the damp chill of the sub-basement. Her body throbbed with exhaustion, and the contractions—faint, irregular Braxton Hicks at first—began to sharpen into something much more alarming.

On the third night, heavy footsteps echoed down the concrete stairs.

The hidden bookshelf swung open with a dry screech. Light flooded the dark utility corridor, silhouetting a tall, immaculate figure.

Marcus stepped through the partition holding a long-stemmed crystal glass filled with expensive champagne. He wore a tailored silk robe, smelling faintly of cologne and expensive scotch.

He crouched down outside the steel bars of the cage, swirling the golden liquid in his glass.

"You're looking a little pale, darling," Marcus murmured, his voice dripping with condescension. He took a slow sip of champagne. "I have to hand it to you, though. You've lasted longer down here than I expected. Most people would have lost their minds by now."

Elena pressed her back against the rear bars, glaring at him through the darkness. She couldn't speak through the duct tape, but her eyes conveyed a level of lethal hatred that made Marcus momentarily step back.

"Don't look at me like that," he snapped, his smile fading into a thin, irritated line. "You brought this on yourself. You were starting to ask too many questions about my corporate accounts. You were getting in the way of my partnership with Chloe. So, look at the bright side—you're solving everyone's problems."

He leaned closer to the bars, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper.

"Tomorrow morning, my lawyers are filing the final paperwork to have you declared legally missing and presumed dead under exceptional circumstances. Once the probate court signs off, the house, your trust fund, and the entire portfolio transfer directly to me. By this time next month, Chloe and I will be living in Monaco."

A sudden, sharp contraction seized Elena’s abdomen. It was unlike anything she had felt before—a blinding wave of white-hot agony that ripped through her lower back and doubled her over.

She let out a muffled gasp, her hands flying to her stomach.

Marcus chuckled, unfazed by her obvious distress. "Oh, please. Don't start with the dramatics. The baby will come when it comes, and down here..." He shrugged nonchalantly. "Well, let's just say infant mortality rates in underground tombs are historically quite high."

As he spoke, a dark, warm wetness spread across the concrete floor beneath Elena’s torn jeans.

Her water had broken.

Marcus noticed the spreading stain on the floor. For the first time, his arrogant smirk faltered, replaced by a flicker of genuine panic.

"Wait—what is that? Did you—are you bleeding?!" he stammered, standing up quickly and spilling champagne onto his silk robe. "Damn it, Elena, don't mess with me! If you go into labor now, it's going to complicate the death certificate!"

Elena stared up at him, her vision blurring at the edges as another agonizing contraction hit, pulling a sharp, agonizing cry past the tape in her throat.

Marcus backed away toward the utility door, pointing a threatening finger at the cage. "Just... hold it in! I'll come back tomorrow after the lawyers leave!"

He turned on his heel and hurried out through the hidden partition, slamming the heavy bookshelf shut behind him.

May you like

Left alone in the freezing dark, Elena clutched the steel bars as wave after wave of intense labor contractions tore through her body. She knew she had minutes—maybe less—before her body gave out completely.

Dad... she whispered into the empty air, tears cutting clean tracks through the dust on her cheeks. Please hurry.
