Chapter 1 - The Descent into Darkness

The concrete floor beneath Elena’s cheek was a freezing, unforgiving anchor to a nightmare that still felt entirely impossible.
She was eight months pregnant, her body heavy and aching, yet she was curled into a brutal fetal position inside a steel cage that smelled of rust, damp earth, and dried blood. Her wrists were raw where thick nylon zip-ties had bitten into her skin, and a strip of industrial duct tape was clamped tightly across her mouth, muffling her ragged breaths.
Just three nights ago, she had been a loving wife living in an architectural masterpiece of a home she had helped design with her own hands. She had been married to Marcus Vance, a rising tech entrepreneur whose public persona was one of charm, philanthropy, and impeccable character.
To the world, Marcus was a modern success story.
To Elena, he was a monster wearing her husband’s face.
It had all started when she accidentally discovered a hidden folder on his home office desktop. Inside lay digital paper trails of a systematic betrayal: credit card statements for luxury hotel suites, deeply intimate text exchanges, and a photograph of Marcus kissing a woman named Chloe in the very kitchen Elena cooked in every evening.
When Elena confronted him with the evidence, expecting remorse, she got something far more terrifying.
Marcus had simply smiled—a cold, dead look in his eyes that she had never seen before.
Two nights later, she woke up in the dead of darkness, suffocating and disoriented. Before she could scream, heavy hands had pinned her to the mattress. Marcus and an accomplice had gagged her, bound her wrists, and carried her down into the subterranean levels of their luxury suburban estate.
Behind a heavy oak bookshelf in the utility room, Marcus had constructed a hidden partition leading to a forgotten sub-basement—a damp, windowless vault housing a reinforced steel cage.
He had shoved her inside.
And then, with chilling precision, Marcus pulled a portable welding torch from the shadows and welded the steel door shut.
“You’re going to disappear, Elena,” his muffled voice had echoed through the bars. “Everyone will believe you ran away because you couldn’t handle the pressure of the baby. My career stays intact, and you rot down here until you vanish completely.”
Now, staring into the impenetrable blackness of her underground prison, Elena clutched her swollen belly. The baby kicked—a sharp, sudden movement that brought tears to her eyes.
Hold on, she prayed silently, pressing her forehead against the freezing steel bars. Please... hold on.
Above her, muffled through the floorboards and insulation, came the unmistakable sound of footsteps, laughter, and pop music.
Marcus hadn’t just imprisoned her. He had moved his mistress, Chloe, into the house less than forty-eight hours after sealing the cage.
Through the thin gaps in the ceiling, Elena heard Chloe trying on her designer shoes, rummaging through her closet, and sleeping in the bed she and Marcus had shared for five years. Even worse, she heard the smooth, rehearsed tones of her husband on television news broadcasts and social media updates, shedding theatrical tears as he begged the public for any information regarding his "mysteriously vanished" pregnant wife.
"We're so worried about her mental state," Marcus told local reporters on the evening news, his voice cracking with Oscar-worthy grief. "If anyone has seen Elena, please, just bring her home."
From beneath the floorboards, Elena let out a muffled, choked sob of pure, unadulterated rage.
Marcus thought she was completely helpless. He thought she was buried alive in a tomb where no one would ever hear her scream.
He had no idea about the old burner phone.
Three weeks ago, while cleaning out her husband’s desk drawers, Elena had found an old, encrypted satellite phone—a relic from her father's past that Marcus had confiscated and hidden away, thinking it was worthless. Remembering her father’s strict instructions to always keep a secondary line of communication, Elena had managed to slip the phone into her pocket before Marcus dragged her downstairs.
When he threw her into the cage, she had managed to push the small device beneath a loose metal floor plate in the corner.
The battery was critically low, flashing a red warning light. But the voice recorder and emergency satellite transmitter still functioned.
Every single night, when the house above grew quiet and Marcus came down to taunt her with scraps of food, Elena pressed record. She captured his footsteps, his casual boasts about selling her inheritance, and his cruel reminders that no one was ever coming to save her.
Marcus believed her father was an easy target. To the public, Arthur Mercer was introduced as a quiet, retired widower who ran a modest overseas security consultancy.
What Marcus never knew—what Elena herself had only discovered as a teenager through locked doors and whispered phone calls in foreign safehouses—was that her father had once been Viktor "The Iron" Rostov, the most feared and untouchable syndicate boss in Eastern Europe. When Elena was born, her father had systematically dismantled his criminal empire, bought out his associates, and laundered his vast fortune into legitimate global assets, all to give his daughter a normal life.
He had vanished from that dark world to keep her safe.
But Viktor Rostov never truly left the shadows. And anyone who threatened his bloodline was about to wake a sleeping giant.
Before Marcus had managed to confiscate her main smartphone, Elena had used the last three percent of its battery to transmit an emergency packet via the hidden satellite device:
A GPS location pin of the suburban estate.
A ten-second audio file of Marcus locking the steel door.

And three short, devastating words:
“Dad, it’s Marcus.”
