Chapter 7 - The New Horizon

The kitchen of the new brick house in Fairmount was warm, bright, and filled with the sweet, rich scent of freshly baked bread and the slow, savory throb of a massive pot of vegetable soup bubbling on the stove.

Emily was sitting in a high chair by the window, her small hands busy rolling a wooden toy car back and forth across the clean oak tray, her face bright with a pure, uncomplicated joy as she laughed at the puppy Daniel had brought home last month.

Daniel stood by the stove, his sleeve rolled to his forearms, his hand holding a wooden spoon as he tasted the soup. He didn't look like a surgeon today; he looked like a father who had finally found his way back to his own hearth.

He walked over to the table, took a piece of celery from the prep board, and dipped it into the soup, winking at Emily, who was currently trying to feed her plush penguin a piece of carrot.

"You're late, Dr. Brooks," Catherine said, her green eyes shining with a quiet, playful defiance as she handed him a clean kitchen towel.

"No, Ms. Preston," Daniel said, his hand sliding around her waist, pulling her close against his side as the baby giggled around them. "I’m exactly on time."

The leaves continued to fall outside, covering the quiet streets of Fairmount in a clean, golden sheet, but inside the walls of the Preston house, the light was warm, steady, and completely unbreakable. They had survived the storm, they had rewritten the rules, and they had finally built a home that no amount of gold could ever buy, and no amount of wind could ever tear down.

They were home.
