Chapter 10 - The Last Breath of the Storm

The living room of the Fairmount house was quiet at 9:00 p.m. The fire in the stone hearth had died down to a bed of warm, glowing embers, casting a soft orange light over the clean oak floors.

Emily was fast asleep on the sofa, her head resting against her mother’s lap, her fingers loosely holding the worn blue crayon she had used to color her picture of the sun.

Catherine stood by the front window, her mug of chamomile tea between her hands, looking out at the dark, silent park. The wind was blowing softly through the maple leaves, carrying the scent of cedar and clean rain.

She reached into her pocket, pulled out the silver wedding ring she had carried for eleven years—the ring that had belonged to Michael Harrison before his betrayal had torn her life apart. She laid it on the wooden mantelpiece next to her mother’s photograph, the silver metal catching the last light of the fire.

She had spent her life believing that her security was measured by the size of her husband’s company, the number of his buildings, and the strength of his financial portfolios.

But as she looked at her daughter sleeping in the warmth of the cabin, she knew that the calculation was finally complete. The debt had been paid not with iron, but with the quiet, difficult choice to stand watch at the gate.

"Catherine," Daniel said softly from the sofa, his hand resting on her shoulder. "The light’s coming up."

Catherine looked out at the eastern horizon, where a thin ribbon of pale, golden light was finally breaking through the dark winter clouds, painting the sky in shades of rose and bronze.

"Yes, Daniel," Catherine said, taking a slow, peaceful sip of her tea. "The morning is finally here."

He turned away from the window, walked over to the table, and sat down with his family, the quiet hum of the house returning like a soothing balm as the door to the old world closed behind them for good.
