Chapter 6 - The Resolution of the Land

The formal transfer of the Calumet waterfront property took place on a quiet Tuesday morning in late October, when the city of Philadelphia was wrapped in a crisp, golden autumn wind.

The boardroom of Preston Logistics was small, warm, and filled with the rich scent of cedar shavings and coffee. Helen Vance sat at the head of the table, her reading glasses resting on her nose as she reviewed the final trust agreements.

Catherine and Daniel sat together at the table, their hands clasped beneath the polished wood, while Arthur Preston stood before the bench.

"The petition requests a permanent modification of the development charter," Arthur said. "The new agreement designates the Calumet slips as a public municipal park and a marine research cooperative, to be managed jointly by the Preston Trust and the children's health foundation."

Helen Vance looked down at Catherine over her glasses, her eyes carrying a quiet, professional respect. "Mrs. Harrison—or should I say, Ms. Preston?"

"Preston, Madam Chair," Catherine said, her voice steady and clear. "My daughter and I have returned to the original family name."

"The court finds this modification to be in the absolute best interest of the city," Helen Vance said, her gavel resting on its block. "The Calumet permits are officially approved under the new charter. Congratulations, Ms. Preston."

As they walked out of the municipal building into the bright, freezing autumn sun, Daniel pulled Catherine close against his chest, his wool coat wrapping around her like a shield against the wind.

"Co-trustee," Daniel smiled, his breath rising in a soft white cloud in the cold air. "That’s a very high rank, Ms. Preston."

"It's the only rank that matters, Dr. Brooks," Catherine said, kissing his cheek. "Now let's go home. Emily is waiting for her dinner."
