Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum at Midnight

At 11:30 p.m., as the gala began to wind down and the elite drifted out toward their waiting limousines, Julian intercepted Khloe near the private cloakroom.

He looked older. The bespoke velvet tuxedo suddenly looked rumpled, his tie slightly askew, the veneer of untouchable confidence completely shattered.

“Khloe. Please. Just... five minutes,” Julian pleaded, his voice cracking as he stepped into her path.

Gabriel stepped forward instantly, his shoulders squaring, but Khloe raised a hand, signaling Gabriel to hold back.

“You have two minutes, Julian,” Khloe said, her voice entirely devoid of emotion. “Make them count.”

Julian looked at her—really looked at her—not as an asset, not as an accessory, but as the woman he had foolishly discarded.

“I made a mistake,” Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of desperation and wounded pride. “I was stressed with the company, I was blind... Dalia was just a distraction, she meant nothing. We can fix this, Khloe. We can go back to how things were. We can raise the baby together. I’ll give you whatever you want—shares, properties, control of the board—”

Khloe stared at him. She didn't feel angry. She didn't feel vindicated. She just felt an overwhelming sense of profound, liberating pity.

“Control of the board, Julian?” Khloe asked softly. “You think this is about a board seat?”

“Then what is it?!” he cried out, desperation breaking his composure. “Why him? Why throw away everything we built?”

“We didn't build anything, Julian,” Khloe said, stepping closer until she was looking right into his panicked eyes. “You built a cage, and you expected me to be grateful for the velvet lining while you locked the door from the outside. You left me because you thought my inability to give you a child made me weak. You replaced me with a younger model because you needed an audience, not a partner.”

She gestured toward the ballroom doors, where Dalia could be seen frantically arguing with her publicist near the exit.

“Look at your life now, Julian. Look at what you chose. You got exactly what you deserved.”

Julian opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. The absolute finality in her eyes told him everything he needed to know.

There was no negotiation. There was no second chance.

“And as for the baby,” Khloe added, her voice dropping into a cold, unbreakable register, “my child will never carry your name. My child will never know what it feels like to be treated like an inconvenience on a calendar. My child has a family now. Real family.”

She turned away from him without waiting for his reply, slipping her arm back through Gabriel’s strong, steady embrace.

As they walked down the grand marble staircase toward the exit, Julian Duval stood alone in the shadows of the cloakroom, watching the woman he had thrown away walk out into a future he would never be part of.
