Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the House of Duval

The rest of the evening was a masterclass in slow-motion social execution.

Word spread through the ballroom like wildfire. Within twenty minutes, every tech founder, venture capitalist, and society columnist knew the truth:

Julian Duval had divorced his brilliant, mastermind strategist wife because she couldn't give him a child—only to watch her walk into the most exclusive gala of the year five months pregnant, on the arm of a man ten times richer and infinitely more powerful than Julian could ever hope to be.

Worse still, the financial press immediately began whispering about what that meant for Julian’s company.

Everyone in the room knew that Julian’s latest enterprise, Duval Dynamics, was currently trying to secure a Series C funding round led by Ascend Capital.

And Gabriel Lancaster had just made it abundantly clear whose side he was on.

From across the room, Khloe watched as three different venture capitalists who had been laughing at Julian’s jokes earlier in the evening suddenly found urgent messages on their phones and walked briskly away from him.

Julian stood by the bar, completely isolated. Dalia was in the powder room, reportedly in tears after a fashion editor made a cutting remark about her silver dress.

“You’re enjoying this, aren't you?” Gabriel murmured, handing Khloe a glass of sparkling cider as they stood on the second-floor balcony overlooking the glittering ballroom.

Khloe took a small sip, looking down at the magnificent, chaotic sea of ambition and greed below.

“Enjoying it?” Khloe smiled faintly. “No, Gabriel. Enjoying it would imply I still care enough about Julian to feel satisfaction. This isn't joy. This is simply gravity doing what gravity always does: pulling a falling object back down to earth.”

“He’s ruined,” Gabriel said simply, checking his phone. “Word just came through from our syndicate desk. Two major institutional investors just pulled their term sheets from Duval Dynamics. His stock is going to open down twenty percent tomorrow morning.”

“Let it,” Khloe said without a hint of remorse. “He built his entire identity on the illusion that he was the architect of his own success. He needs to learn what it feels like to be built over.”

She felt a gentle flutter against her palm—a tiny, unmistakable kick from the life growing inside her.

She placed her hand over her stomach, smiling softly.

For the first time in her life, she wasn't building someone else’s empire. She wasn't editing someone else’s pitch deck, or swallowing her own worth to keep a fragile male ego intact.

She was building her own legacy.
