Chapter 3 - The Turning of the Tide

The double doors of the Armand Grand Hall swung inward, and the ambient roar of three hundred elite socialites washed over them like a tide.
At first, no one noticed their entrance. The room was currently captivated by a string quartet playing Vivaldi near the grand staircase while Dalia Fontaine held court with the editor-in-chief of Vogue Manhattan.
Julian stood beside her, sipping a glass of vintage Dom Pérignon, laughing at something a tech venture capitalist was saying about AI valuations.
Then, the murmurs started near the entrance.
It didn't happen all at once. It was a ripple effect, spreading outward like a stone dropped into still water.
A fashion blogger paused mid-sentence, her champagne flute hovering near her lips. A real estate mogul stopped laughing, his eyes locking onto the doorway.
Julian felt the shift in the room before he saw it. He turned his head casually, expecting a senator or a foreign dignitary.
Instead, he saw Khloe.
The first thing Julian Duval saw was not her face.
It was her stomach.
Five months pregnant, unmistakable and undeniable, wrapped in liquid black velvet. One of her hands rested calmly, protectively, over the life he never knew existed—the very thing he had told the world she could never give him.
The second thing he saw was the man standing beside her.
Gabriel Lancaster.
Billionaire. Philanthropist. Founder of Ascend Capital. The private financial titan behind half the cultural institutions in Manhattan, including the very pageant foundation that had crowned Dalia Fontaine six months ago.
Gabriel’s hand was resting lightly at the small of Khloe’s back, a gesture of absolute, uncontested possession and profound respect.
In that frozen second, while the string quartet stumbled over a measure and three hundred of New York’s most powerful people held their collective breath beneath the crystal chandeliers, Julian Duval finally understood something he should have learned two years earlier.
You can throw a woman away.
You can sign papers, draft NDAs, and tell the tabloids she was broken.
But you do not get to decide what she becomes after that.
Julian’s face went completely, bloodlessly pale. The glass of Dom Pérignon in his hand trembled, the amber liquid sloshing over the rim.
Dalia noticed the sudden silence. She followed Julian’s paralyzed gaze across the ballroom floor.
When her eyes landed on Khloe—radiant, breathtaking, and visibly carrying another man’s child while wearing a gown that cost more than a luxury sedan—Dalia’s smile faltered, her painted lips parting in genuine, unscripted horror.
“Julian?” Dalia whispered, clutching his sleeve with manicured claws. “Who is that? Why is everyone looking at her?”
Julian couldn't answer. His vocal cords felt fused together by molten lead.

Because across the polished marble floor, Khloe did not shrink. She did not look down. She raised her chin, locked her dark, piercing eyes directly onto Julian’s terrified gaze, and offered him a slow, razor-sharp smile.
The smile of a woman who had walked through fire, burned away the ashes, and returned as the queen of the kingdom he thought he owned.
