Chapter 4 – Home

One year later...
Our family gathered in the backyard for a small celebration.
Not because everything had been forgotten.
Because everything had been rebuilt.
Eli and Noah raced across the grass chasing bubbles.
Their laughter drifted through the warm afternoon air.
Caleb wrapped one arm around my shoulders.
"We almost lost hope."
I squeezed his hand.
"But we didn't lose each other."
Noah walked over carrying two drawings.
One showed our family standing together beneath a bright blue sky.
The other showed a little house with every window glowing.
He handed them to me.
"This is what home feels like now."
I smiled through tears.
"What makes it home?"
He thought for a moment before answering.
"Nobody has to be scared here."
As the sun began to set, I realized that homes are not remembered for their walls or their furniture.
They are remembered for the people who make one another feel safe.
And sometimes...
The greatest miracle is not that someone finds the way home.
