Chapter 2 – The Truth Behind the Lie

Eli buried his face against my shoulder.

His small body trembled so violently that I could barely hold him.

Then he whispered again.

"Don't let Daddy be angry."

The words silenced the entire garage.

Detective Harper knelt beside us.

"Eli," he said gently, "you're safe now."

"No one is going to hurt you."

Eli slowly looked up.

His frightened eyes searched every face before stopping on mine.

"I wanted to come home."

"I know, sweetheart."

"I missed Noah."

Tears rolled down my face.

"So did he."

Within minutes, paramedics wrapped Eli in warm blankets while officers carefully documented the scene.

Rachel returned just as investigators were loading evidence into marked vehicles.

She froze when she saw the police.

"I can explain."

Detective Harper shook his head.

"You'll have that opportunity."

"But not here."

As she was escorted away, she looked directly at me.

"I thought I was protecting this family."

I answered quietly.

"No."

"You were protecting a lie."
