Chapter 6 - The Power of Attorney

Daniel stepped between his wife and his mother, his body completely rigid. "She was under the influence of unauthorized sedatives when she signed those papers, Elise. That document won't hold up in a court of law for ten seconds."

"It will hold up long enough to freeze your corporate accounts, Daniel," Elise countered, her voice dropping into a low, venomous purr. "The board of directors in London is already highly skeptical of your ability to manage the overseas acquisition. If a public scandal breaks out about you neglecting your mentally ill mother and disputing her medical care, the acquisition will fail. You'll be removed as CEO before the month is over."

"You don't care about the company," Daniel said. "You only care about the trust."

"The trust is thirty million dollars, Daniel," Elise said, her eyes flashing with a sudden, naked greed. "Your father built this house, but I am the one who has to live in it. I am the one who has to play the dutiful daughter-in-law to a woman who doesn't even remember my name half the time. I deserve my share."

"You won't get a single dime," Daniel said.

"We'll see," Elise smiled. "The driver is waiting downstairs. I suggest you take your mother to her room and let her rest. We have a big day tomorrow. The medical evaluators from the state are coming to confirm her placement in the memory care facility in West Palm Beach."

She turned and walked down the hallway, her high heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor.

Margaret looked up at Daniel, her eyes wide with terror. "Daniel... please. Don't let her send me away. I want to die in my own house."

Daniel knelt beside her, taking both of her cold, trembling hands in his. "I promise you, Mom. She is not sending you anywhere. Nora, get her packed. Now."
