Chapter 4 - The Long Road to Recovery

The hospital room was quiet, save for the rhythmic beeping of the ventilator. Layla was still weak, but the doctors had finally identified the correct treatment protocol.
Julian sat by the window, reading a book aloud to her. Her eyes were open now, tracking his movements.
"Is it gone?" she whispered, her voice still rough.
"The water?" Julian asked, setting the book down. "Yes, Layla. We’ve brought in portable purification systems for the entire district. No one in Oakridge will drink that poison again."
Layla reached out, taking his hand with her small, pale fingers. "You're a CEO. Why do you care about a girl on a bench?"
Julian looked at the chair where his daughter, Sophie, used to sit. "Because for a long time, I forgot that I was a father first and a CEO second. You reminded me."
The door opened and a social worker stepped in. "Mr. Thorne? We've located a distant aunt for Layla. She’s willing to take her in, once she’s discharged."
Julian nodded, though a sharp pang of grief hit him. He had hoped, against all reason, that he could play a role in her life.
"I’ll pay for her education," Julian said, his voice firm. "And I’ll build her a home that has the cleanest water in this entire state. But I’ll step back. She needs family."
He stood up to leave, giving Layla one last, lingering look. She squeezed his hand. "Thank you, Julian."

As he walked out into the hospital hallway, Julian finally felt the weight of his own life shifting. He had lost a fortune in contracts, he was facing massive legal battles, and his reputation in the corporate world was in tatters.
He didn't care.
