Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Well

The emergency room at Oakridge General was a battlefield of fluorescent lights and frantic nurses. Julian stood by the glass door, watching as a team of specialists descended on the seven-year-old.

"Severe pulmonary distress," a doctor stated, not even looking at Julian. "Her lungs are inflamed—chemically burned. What did she ingest?"

"I don't know," Julian said, his voice cold and hard. "She mentioned the water. Her home water."

"That’s the third case this week," a nurse muttered, unaware Julian was listening. "The folks living down near the old manufacturing site. They say the wells are running clear, but the blood tests are coming back with heavy metal toxicity."

Julian’s blood went cold. He realized the chemical drums he’d been transporting were leaking into the local water table, and the manufacturing giants in town were covering it up by bribing the local testing facilities.

He didn't return to the mansion. He went to a small, private office he kept in town. He pulled his phone and dialled his most trusted lead investigator, a man who didn't care about corporate hierarchies.

"I need a full analysis of the waste disposal records for the Oakridge plants," Julian commanded, pacing the room. "And find me the mother of a girl named Layla Mercer. If she’s alive, I want her found. If she’s not… I want to know exactly how she died."

Within hours, the investigation uncovered a nightmare. Layla’s mother hadn't died of a natural illness; she had died of organ failure brought on by prolonged ingestion of poisoned groundwater, a fact the local coroner had been paid to label as 'chronic respiratory failure.'

Julian sat in the dark of his office, the glow of the computer monitor illuminating the names of the people responsible: the Mayor, the Plant Director, and his own local operations manager.

He looked at the picture of his own daughter, Sophie, sitting on his desk. She had died because of a reckless driver. Layla was dying because of corporate greed.

"Not this time," Julian whispered, his face hardening into the mask of a man who was about to burn his own world down to build a better one.
