Chapter 3 - The CEO’s Gambit

The town meeting the following Tuesday was supposed to be a standard affair. But when Julian Thorne walked through the doors of the Oakridge Town Hall, the air in the room shifted.

He wasn't wearing a suit. He was wearing the same heavy sweater he’d had on the night he found Layla. He carried a single, thick leather-bound binder.

The Mayor, a man with a jovial face and blood-stained hands, smiled at him. "Julian! To what do we owe the pleasure?"

Julian walked to the podium, ignoring the applause of the local elite. He opened the binder and placed it on the stand.

"I have spent my life building a logistics empire," Julian began, his voice amplified by the hall’s speakers. "I believed that if I kept my hands clean, I could ignore what was in the containers. I was wrong."

He turned the pages, projecting photos of Layla’s mother’s medical records onto the giant screen behind him. "This town has been trading the lives of children for the profit margins of three factories. I have evidence of illegal waste dumping, false water safety reports, and bribery that reaches the highest level of our local government."

The hall erupted in chaos. The Mayor tried to stand, but security guards hired by Julian—men who worked for him, not the town—blocked his path.

"Layla Mercer is seven years old," Julian shouted over the noise. "She is currently fighting for her life in a hospital you all claimed was 'standard practice.' I am not just here to report this. I am here to shut it all down."

He pulled out his phone and hit 'send.'

"Every contract Thorne Global holds with the Oakridge manufacturing district is terminated, effective immediately. And I have forwarded this entire file to the Federal Department of Justice and the National Press Association. The auditors are arriving at dawn."

The room went dead silent. The Mayor looked as if he’d been struck by lightning. The game was up.
