Chapter 8 - The Shadow on the Docks

Two weeks later, down by the industrial shipping piers of South Boston where the salt air mixed with diesel fumes, Nolan Pierce stood shivering in a cheap wool coat.

His bespoke tuxedo was gone. His tailored suits were locked inside federal evidence lockers.

Before him stood three men in dark overcoats.

At the center stood Luca Bellandi, hands casually tucked into his pockets, watching Nolan with the cold, bored expression of a cat staring at a cornered mouse.

“Mr. Bellandi—please,” Nolan stammered, his hands shaking as he held out a crumpled manila folder. “The federal agents are auditing every transaction. If you just call off your lawyers—if you let me keep my minority shares in the shipping grid—I’ll leave Massachusetts tonight. I’ll never come back.”

Luca didn’t take the folder. He didn’t even blink.

“Minority shares, Mr. Pierce?” Luca said, his voice smooth and lethally calm. “You don’t own shares in the shipping grid. You never did. You were a tenant renting space in a house built by my family fifty years before your grandfather learned how to launder money through municipal bonds.”

“Serena—tell him!” Nolan panicked, turning desperately toward a sleek black Maybach parked ten feet away.

The rear window rolled down smoothly.

Serena sat inside the leather-lined interior, wearing a structured wool coat, her dark eyes looking out at Nolan with absolute, chilling detachment.

She didn’t say a word. She didn’t need to.

She raised her left hand, letting the heavy, custom platinum signet ring—the Bellandi crest flashing brightly in the cold harbor light—catch Nolan’s eye for one final, agonizing second.

Then she pressed a button.

The tinted window rolled up silently, shutting him out of her world forever.

Luca took a single step closer to Nolan, his voice dropping into a harsh, razor-sharp whisper.

“Get out of Boston, Nolan,” Luca told him. “And if you ever speak Serena’s name again, the federal indictment won’t be the worst thing waiting for you at the end of the dock.”

Nolan turned and ran, his footsteps splashing frantically through the slush and melting snow, swallowed entirely by the gray Boston fog.
