Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Queen

The rain fell softly against the reinforced glass of the penthouse windows, washing away the last traces of winter from the Boston skyline.
Inside, the fire crackled in the stone hearth, throwing long, warm shadows across the polished oak floors.
Serena sat at her new, custom-built jeweler’s bench—a massive mahogany table fitted with precision microscopes, pneumatic hammers, and velvet trays holding raw diamonds, unpolished rubies, and deep, clear emeralds.
She held a strip of white gold in her left hand, her jeweler’s saw moving with steady, rhythmic grace.
Luca stood behind her, his arms wrapping around her waist, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder as he watched her work.
“You’ve been at that bench for four hours,” Luca murmured against her neck, his breath warm and steady.
“A true artisan never rushes a masterpiece,” Serena replied without stopping her saw.
“You already are a masterpiece.”
She stopped sawing, turning her head slightly to look up at him. The dark eyes that used to doubt every instinct, that used to apologize for taking up space in a room, now burned with the fierce, unshakeable sovereignty of a woman who ruled her own empire.
“Nolan called my old studio line today,” Serena said casually.
Luca’s posture stiffened instantly, a dark, protective shadow crossing his face. “What did he want?”
“To beg for money. He’s living out of a motel in Rhode Island, working night shifts at a car wash.” Serena turned fully in his arms, looking straight into Luca’s eyes with a serene, beautiful smile. “I didn’t answer. I didn’t even listen to the voicemail.”
Luca’s expression softened. He reached up, his large, warm hand cupping the side of her face, his thumb gently brushing across her cheekbone.
“And what does that tell you?” Luca asked softly.
Serena placed her hand over his, feeling the solid, heavy gold of her signet ring against his skin.
“It tells me,” Serena whispered, “that I spent six years believing I was someone’s second choice, only to realize I was a queen waiting for her kingdom.”

Luca leaned down and kissed her—deep, slow, and absolute.
And across the city of Boston, beneath the cold winter stars, the empire they had built together stood unbreakable, anchored by a woman who would never, ever be anyone’s backup again.
