Chapter 4 - Breach of Trust

Mark arrived at the house at 3:00 a.m. with an emergency custody order and two police officers. He looked smug, his hair styled, his suit ready for the cameras.

"She’s unstable, Officer," Mark said, pointing at Rachel as she opened the door. "Look at her. She’s wearing tactical gear. She kidnapped him from a private residence."

The officers stepped forward, looking wary. Rachel stood perfectly still, her hands visible, her posture relaxed.

"I have a counter-filing," Rachel said calmly. She handed the officer a tablet. "This is an emergency order for the protection of a minor, detailing the abuse and neglect at the residence of Caroline Sterling. It also contains evidence of ongoing financial crimes linked to the father."

The officer frowned, scrolling through the documents. The longer he read, the less interested he became in Mark’s custody order.

"Mr. Mark," the officer said, looking up. "I think you need to leave before we have to discuss the contents of this file in the back of my cruiser."

Mark’s face crumbled. He had counted on the "crazy veteran" trope. He hadn't counted on Rachel being the smartest person in the room.
