Chapter 9 - A New Tradition
By December, nearly a full year after that freezing Christmas Eve in Ohio, the house on Maple Street was alive with warmth, laughter, and the rich, comforting aroma of baking vanilla and cinnamon.
The living room was decorated with a tall, vibrant evergreen tree, adorned not with expensive, fragile ornaments bought to impress guests, but with handmade paper snowflakes, painted pinecones, and glittering silver stars crafted by Lily’s creative hands.
There was no tension in the air. No walking on eggshells. No performative cruelty.
Just peace.
On Christmas Eve evening, a soft, powdery snow began to fall outside, blanketing the front yard in a pristine white sheet.
Lily, now nine years old and full of bright, uninhibited energy, ran into the kitchen holding a tray of freshly baked cookies.
“Mommy! Look! The timer just went off!” she cheered, her eyes sparkling with holiday excitement.
I smiled, pulling my apron off and wiping a light smudge of flour from my cheek. I looked down at my checking account balance on my phone screen—a comfortable cushion this year, earned through hard work, stable freelance contracts, and the restored security of our family estate. But more valuable than any number in a bank account was the absolute freedom we had claimed for ourselves.
“They look perfect, sweetie,” I said, lifting the warm tray onto the counter.
We set out two plates by the fireplace, lit a single white candle on the mantle, and sat together on the big plush sofa, wrapped in a soft wool blanket.
As the glowing lights of the Christmas tree reflected in the living room windows, Lily leaned her head against my shoulder, her breathing slowing into a peaceful, rhythmic calm.
