Chapter 7 - Restitution and Renewal
By early spring, the legal proceedings reached their final, decisive conclusion.
The court approved a comprehensive restitution package that transferred full ownership of the Maple Street homestead and the primary trust accounts directly to me as the rightful primary beneficiary, while placing strict financial liens on Vanessa’s personal assets to cover legal costs and court fees.
Vanessa accepted a plea deal resulting in a four-year sentence for wire fraud and forgery, while my mother received a suspended sentence and mandatory community service, her social standing in the community permanently destroyed.
When the official property deeds were finally signed over into my name at the county courthouse, the clerk handed me a thick manila folder containing the keys to the homestead.
“Congratulations, Mrs. Vance—excuse me, Ms. Vance,” the clerk smiled warmly. “Your estate is fully cleared.”
Lily and I spent our first weekend in our new home packing up our small apartment across state lines. Driving our old, dented sedan up the maple-lined driveway of the house where I had grown up, I felt a profound sense of peace wash over me.
