Chapter 4 - The Sound of Sirens

Before anyone could demand another answer, the sharp, wailing shriek of emergency vehicle sirens cut through the snowy Ohio night. The sound grew louder by the second, echoing off the suburban houses along the street until the flashing red and blue lights of two police cruisers painted the living room windows in strobe-like flashes.
Vanessa stopped struggling. Her face drained of all color, leaving her looking hollow and defeated.
“Did you... did you call the police?” Vanessa whispered, staring at me as if I were a stranger.
“I didn't have to,” I replied calmly. “The financial crimes division takes grand larceny and elder financial abuse very seriously, especially when it involves falsified notarizations on state-registered deeds.”
Heavy boots crunched on the icy driveway outside. A loud, authoritative knock rattled the wooden front door before the latch turned and two uniformed county sheriff’s deputies stepped into the warm foyer, flanked by a plainclothes investigator.
“Mrs. Diane Vance?” the lead investigator asked, flashing his gold badge. “And Mrs. Vanessa Sterling?”
Mom’s knees buckled slightly, and she had to catch herself against the edge of the television stand.
“I am Detective Miller,” the investigator announced, stepping into the ruined living room and looking down at the spilled wine, the torn wrapping paper, and the scattered family photos. “We have active warrants for questioning regarding fraudulent estate execution and wire fraud related to the Vance family trust. I advise both of you to remain silent.”
Mark slowly released Vanessa’s arm, stepping back as if touching her would contaminate him. He looked at the detective, his expression cold and unreadable.
“Officer, I’m her husband,” Mark said, pulling his wallet from his back pocket and handing over his business card. “I want it on the record that I had no knowledge of any fraudulent asset transfers. My personal accounts and assets are entirely separate from my wife’s corporate holdings.”
Vanessa stared at Mark in horror. “Mark? You’re abandoning me right now?”
May you like
“You lied to me for four years about where your lake house funding came from,” Mark answered flatly, refusing to look her in the eye. “You told me it was an inheritance payout processed legally. You brought criminal liability into our home.”
Detective Miller motioned to the deputies. “Place both Diane Vance and Vanessa Sterling under arrest. Secure the premises for a forensic search warrant execution.”
