Chapter 6 - The Courtroom Showdown

The Family Court of Mexico City on Avenida Juárez was a cavernous, echoing maze of bureaucratic gray concrete and fluorescent lighting.

It was Monday morning when Mariana walked through the double doors, flanked by Mateo Silva and two corporate security guards. She wore dark sunglasses, a charcoal trench coat, and carried herself with the unstoppable momentum of a tidal wave.

Waiting in the hallway outside courtroom 304 were Daniel and Carmen.

They looked like ghosts of their former selves. Daniel’s suit was wrinkled, his shoes scuffed, and Carmen looked twenty years older, her face pinched with bitterness and malnutrition.

When Daniel saw Mariana approach, he lunged forward, his eyes wild with desperate fury.

“Mariana! You witch! You absolute monster!” Daniel screamed, pointing a shaking finger at her as building security immediately stepped between them, pushing him back. “You left us on the street! We’ve been sleeping in a motel! How can you be so cruel to your own husband?!”

Mariana stopped a few feet away. She slowly lowered her sunglasses, revealing dark, piercing eyes that radiated absolute power and zero fear.

“My husband?” Mariana asked, her voice echoing off the stone walls. “You mean the man who stood by while his mother locked my three-year-old daughter out on a freezing balcony with a piece of moldy bread?”

Carmen sneered, stepping past her son, her voice shrill with venom. “She was a spoiled brat who needed discipline! You’re a cold, unnatural mother! You deserve to rot—”

“Save your breath for the judge, Carmen,” Mariana interrupted, her voice cutting through the corridor like a butcher’s knife. “Because the video footage from the hallway security cameras showing Camila locked outside for forty-two minutes has already been accepted into evidence. Along with the financial audit proving Daniel embezzled over eight hundred thousand pesos in corporate funds over the last three years.”

Daniel’s face turned the color of ash. He staggered backward, catching himself against the wooden bench. “Embezzled... what are you talking about?”

“Fraud, Daniel,” Mateo Silva said smoothly, tapping his briefcase. “Federal white-collar fraud. Carry a maximum sentence of nine years. Unless, of course, you sign the uncontested divorce papers, renounce all claims to marital property, and agree to supervised visitation only under court order.”

The courtroom doors swung open at that exact moment, and the bailiff’s voice rang out.

“Case number 442-B: Vale versus Falkner. All rise.”
