Chapter 3 - The Summons at the Gates

By Thursday afternoon, the reality of their new financial destitution had begun to sink into the marrow of the Falkner household.
Daniel sat at the glass dining table, which was now completely cleared of the leftover lobster and gourmet seafood from Tuesday night. In its place sat a stack of past-due notices, electricity shut-off warnings from CFE, and final demand letters for the luxury vehicle leases.
“What do you mean, they repossessed the car?” Valeria screamed from the foyer, slamming her designer handbag onto the console table. “I walked out of the pilates studio and the space in the valet bay was empty! The manager said the lease was canceled for non-payment!”
Carmen emerged from the kitchen, wringing her hands, her face pinched with anxiety. “Daniel, call her again. Call her boss in Monterrey! Tell them she’s having a psychotic break! She’s ruining us! We have dinner with the senator’s family on Saturday night, and I don't even have enough cash in my purse to pay for our groceries today!”
Daniel rubbed his temples, a splitting migraine pounding behind his eyes. He had called Mariana’s corporate office three times that morning, only to be stonewalled by executive assistants who informed him that Mrs. Falkner was currently on an indefinite international leave of absence and could not be reached for personal matters.
“She’s not answering, Mom,” Daniel muttered bitterly, staring down at his phone. “She blocked my number. And when I called her corporate office, they told me to contact her legal counsel.”
Before Carmen could launch into another tirade, the sharp buzz of the apartment’s intercom interrupted them.
Daniel looked up, a flicker of hope sparking in his chest. “That must be the concierge with a delivery. Maybe she finally came to her senses.”
He strode quickly across the living room and pressed the intercom button. “Yes? Who is it?”
“Federal Judicial Police and legal process servers,” a cold, formal voice crackled through the speaker. “We have court-ordered document service for Daniel Falkner, Carmen Falkner, and Valeria Falkner. Please buzz us up, or we will authorize building security to open the service elevator.”
Daniel’s stomach plummeted into his boots. He stared at the intercom speaker as if it were a venomous snake.
“Police?!” Carmen gasped, rushing over. “What are they talking about? We haven't committed any crimes!”
“Buzz them in, Mr. Falkner,” the voice on the intercom repeated, sharp and unyielding. “Or we initiate entry by force.”
Two minutes later, heavy knocks sounded against the double doors of the penthouse.
Daniel, his hands visibly shaking, unlocked and pulled the door open. Standing in the hallway were two men in dark suits carrying official municipal folders, flanked by a uniformed bailiff from the Family Court of Mexico City.
“Are you Daniel Falkner?” the lead process server asked, holding out a thick stack of legal documents.
“I... yes,” Daniel choked out.
“You are hereby served with emergency petitions for divorce, financial injunctions, property seizure requests, and a restraining order prohibiting you or your immediate family from approaching Mariana Vale or minor child Camila Falkner within a radius of one thousand meters,” the server recited mechanically, shoving the papers into Daniel’s chest.
Behind him, Carmen let out a blood-curdling shriek and lunged forward.
“This is a mistake! My son is an honorable man! That bitch has no right to lock us out of our own home!” Carmen screamed, grabbing at the process server’s lapels.
The bailiff stepped forward, his hand resting firmly on his holster. “Ma’am, I advise you to step back. Interfering with federal court process servers is a punishable offense under Article 189 of the Penal Code.”
Valeria burst into tears, sinking onto the foyer floor, clutching her head. “My life is over! Everything is gone!”
Daniel flipped open the top document, his eyes scanning the aggressive legal prose until they landed on a specific clause near the bottom of page four. His breath caught in his throat, and the papers slipped from his nerveless fingers, scattering across the marble floor.
It was the property injunction.
The Polanco penthouse—the very apartment they stood in, the symbol of their social standing—was not marital property. It had been legally transferred into an irrevocable family trust bearing Camila’s name, managed exclusively by Mariana Vale.

And attached to the document was an eviction notice giving all non-trust occupants—Daniel, Carmen, and Valeria—forty-eight hours to vacate the premises.
