Chapter 6 - Shadows on Maplewood Drive

The weekend following Donald DeLuca’s federal indictment passed with a fragile, healing quiet. The news vans that had initially choked Maplewood Drive like vultures had long since packed up their equipment, realizing that the suburban house offered no sensational soundbites beyond the steady hum of a family rebuilding its foundation.
Liam spent those two days entirely offline. His phone remained powered down and tossed into a desk drawer. He wanted no part of the frantic voicemails left by panicked former business associates or the frantic text messages from distant relatives trying to gauge which way the wind was blowing.
Instead, he spent his time on the living room floor, surrounded by plastic building blocks, crayon drawings, and the sound of children's laughter.
Emma’s nightmares, which had plagued her for the first few nights following the incident, began to subside. She no longer woke up crying about the cold sink or the threat of the front porch. Whenever a shadow crossed the hallway, she instinctively looked to Liam, and his reassuring smile was all it took to restore her sense of safety.
Noah, too, seemed to drop a heavy invisible weight from his young shoulders. The ten-year-old had taken on a protective, parental role far too early in life, shielding his little sister whenever Vanessa’s tyranny reached a fever pitch. Now, watching Noah laugh freely as he helped Emma bake chocolate chip cookies in the kitchen on Sunday afternoon, Liam felt a deep, piercing ache in his chest—followed by a fierce wave of maternal-like resolve. He would never let anyone harm his children again.
Yet, while the inside of the house was bathed in sunlight, the outside world was still reckoning with the shockwaves of the DeLuca empire's collapse.
On Monday morning, Liam turned his phone back on.
The device buzzed incessantly for nearly three minutes straight, flooding the screen with missed call notifications, banking alerts, and secure messages. Among them was a clean, encrypted notification from his brother Marcus:
“The fallout is complete. DeLuca’s assets are frozen pending federal asset forfeiture. His legal team is scrambling for a plea deal, but the U.S. Attorney’s office isn't biting. You’re completely in the clear, little bro. Come into the city tomorrow; we need to talk about restructuring your firm’s supply chains.”
Liam exhaled slowly, tossing the phone onto the kitchen island. He looked over at Emma, who was happily munching on a piece of toast, completely oblivious to the corporate warfare that had been fought on her behalf.
“Alright, kids,” Liam announced, clapping his hands gently. “Shoes on. We’re heading out today. Daddy has some errands to run, and then we’re going to the park.”

As they loaded into the SUV, Liam noticed a sleek, unmarked black sedan parked three houses down the street. It hadn't been there a moment ago. A pair of mirrored sunglasses flashed briefly from behind the driver’s side window before the sedan smoothly pulled away from the curb and vanished around the corner.
Liam’s eyes narrowed. The DeLucas were finished, but high-stakes underworld syndicates didn't evaporate overnight. Someone was watching. And whoever it was, they didn't look like reporters.
