Chapter 4 - The Chicago Connection

By Thursday afternoon, the conflict shifted from a suburban domestic dispute into a high-stakes corporate chess match.

Marcus Vance—a towering, sharply dressed man with silver-streaked hair and cold, calculating eyes—sat across from Liam in a private conference room at a downtown high-rise overlooking the Chicago riverfront. Spread across the mahogany table were three thick binders containing tax records, shell company registrations, and environmental audit reports regarding DeLuca Enterprises.

“You picked a hell of a family to marry into, little brother,” Marcus remarked, flipping open a folder filled with bank statements. “Donald DeLuca didn't make his first ten million building housing complexes honestly. He did it by bribing zoning commissioners, dumping toxic industrial waste on municipal land in the outer boroughs, and using predatory shell companies to launder bribe money.”

Liam leaned back in his chair, folding his arms. “I don't care about his history, Marcus. I just need to make sure he can't use his financial leverage to crush my architectural firm or take my kids.”

Marcus let out a low, confident chuckle, sliding a glossy photograph across the table. It showed a sleek, expensive yacht docked in Miami bearing the name The Golden DeLuca.

“DeLuca thinks he’s untouchable because local politicians are in his pocket,” Marcus said smoothly. “But he made one fatal mistake last year: he used a federal infrastructure grant intended for low-income housing development to finance his daughter’s trust fund and purchase three luxury properties in the Bahamas. That’s not just a civil zoning violation, Liam. That’s federal wire fraud and embezzlement.”

Liam stared at the photograph, a grim, satisfied smile touching the corners of his mouth. “How fast can federal investigators move on this?”

“They’re already moving,” Marcus replied, checking his luxury wristwatch. “My team compiled the complete digital paper trail early this morning and delivered it directly to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Manhattan. By Friday morning, federal marshals won't be serving civil subpoenas—they’ll be executing search warrants on DeLuca’s corporate headquarters.”

Just as Marcus finished speaking, Liam’s cell phone buzzed violently on the table.

It was an incoming call from an unknown, blocked number.

Liam gestured for Marcus to remain quiet, tapped the speakerphone button, and answered. “Vance speaking.”

“Liam! You arrogant little piece of trash!”

It wasn't Arthur Sterling the lawyer. It was Donald DeLuca himself. The old man’s voice was shaking with uncontained fury, his breathing ragged and frantic.

“Donald,” Liam said smoothly. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“What did you do?!” DeLuca roared through the phone speaker, sounds of shouting and slamming doors echoing in the background. “Federal agents just raided my primary office! They seized our hard drives, froze our corporate accounts, and federal marshals are at my home right now with a warrant! Do you have any idea what you’ve started?!”

“I have a very clear idea, Donald,” Liam said, his voice as calm as glass. “You threatened to destroy my livelihood and take my children because your daughter is a sadistic sociopath who likes torturing four-year-olds. You thought money made you a god. It just made you a target.”

“Listen to me, you son of a bitch!” DeLuca screamed. “Call off your federal contacts right now, or I swear to God I will bury you so deep—!”

“The only one getting buried here, Donald, is your empire,” Liam interrupted coldly. “Tell Vanessa that divorce papers are being hand-delivered to her temporary motel room this afternoon. If she contests them even for a second, I’ll release the second batch of kitchen footage to the national news networks.”

BEEP.

Liam hung up the phone, turned it off completely, and tossed it onto the table.

The room fell into a profound, satisfying silence.

Marcus looked at his younger brother with a mixture of amusement and fierce family pride. “Remind me never to get on your bad side, Liam.”

“Just protecting my family, Marcus,” Liam said softly, standing up and buttoning his jacket. “Just protecting my family.”
