Chapter 5 - The Ashes of an Empire

By Friday evening, the financial and social collapse of the DeLuca family was the leading headline on local news broadcasts across the tri-state area.

“DeLuca Enterprises under federal investigation for massive wire fraud and embezzlement; CEO Donald DeLuca faces up to twenty years in federal penitentiary…”

Liam sat in his living room, watching the news report on the flat-screen TV while the aroma of freshly baked cinnamon rolls drifted from the kitchen. Noah was helping Emma build a towering castle out of colorful plastic blocks on the rug beside the sofa, their giggles echoing warmly through the house.

The front doorbell rang—a polite, standard chime.

Liam stood up, walking calmly to the front door. He pulled it open, expecting a courier or perhaps his brother Marcus stopping by to celebrate.

Instead, standing on the porch was Vanessa.

She looked a shadow of her former self. Her designer clothes were rumpled, her makeup was smeared from crying, and her haughty arrogance had been entirely replaced by a desperate, pathetic pleading.

“Liam… please,” Vanessa whimpered, taking a step forward. “You have to help me. Daddy has been arrested, our bank accounts are frozen, and my lawyers abandoned me. I have nowhere to go.”

Liam didn't step back, nor did he invite her in. He simply looked down at her with a cold, absolute indifference that hurt her far more than any slap could have.

“You picked the wrong house to terrorize, Vanessa,” Liam said quietly. “And you picked the wrong little girl to play games with.”

“I’m sorry! I’ll go to therapy! I’ll leave the state! Just don't let them take everything!” she sobbed, reaching out to grab his sleeve.

Liam gently but firmly brushed her hand away.

He reached behind the door, picked up her heavy designer suitcase—the exact one he had thrown out onto the driveway days earlier—and set it down squarely on the porch mat at her feet.

“The divorce papers were filed this morning, and your signature isn't required for a default judgment given the criminal investigations,” Liam said evenly. “Goodbye, Vanessa.”

Before she could speak another word, Liam closed the heavy oak door and slid the deadbolt locked.

He walked back into the living room, where Emma looked up from her block castle, her big, innocent eyes locking onto his face.

“Daddy, who was at the door?” Emma asked softly.

Liam smiled, dropping to his knees on the rug beside her, and gently placed a block on top of her tower.

“Nobody important, bug,” Liam said, his voice warm and steady as he wrapped his arms around both of his children. “Just a wrong number. Everything’s fine now. Let’s finish our castle.”

And for the first time in years, the house on Maplewood Drive felt truly safe, truly peaceful, and entirely filled with love.
