Chapter 8 - The Reunion in the Sky

I rushed down the narrow aisle of the private jet, dropping to my knees beside the leather seat. With trembling hands, I untied the fabric gag from around Olivia’s mouth and unclipped the heavy plastic zip-ties binding her wrists.

“Ethan...” she gasped, her voice raspy and weak as she collapsed forward into my arms.

I caught her, pulling her tightly against my chest, burying my face in her hair as a wave of overwhelming relief and fury washed over me.

“I’ve got you, sweetheart. I’ve got you,” I whispered, kissing the top of her head. “You’re safe. It’s over.”

“They... they kept me in the basement of the old lake house,” she choked out, tears finally spilling over her lashes as her hands gripped my jacket. “When I found out about the offshore transfers, your mother... she had Ryan drug me. They staged that entire corpse in the living room to break you psychologically so you’d sign the probate release forms without asking questions.”

“I know,” I murmured, stroking her back. “I found the microSD card you left in your hand. You saved us, Olivia. You saved our family.”

Footsteps echoed up the metal stairs of the aircraft cabin. Federal Marshal Vance stepped inside, flanked by two armed officers.

“Mr. Sterling, we’ve secured the primary suspects. Ryan is cooperating and already throwing your mother under the bus for orchestrating the entire financial fraud and the abduction.”

I looked over my shoulder, my eyes hard as flint. “Take them both into federal custody without bail. File every charge in the book—wire fraud, identity theft, kidnapping, and desecration of human remains.”

“Understood,” the marshal nodded, turning to coordinate the transport units waiting on the tarmac below.

I helped Olivia to her feet, supporting her weight as we carefully walked down the airplane stairs. The cold Chicago wind whipped around us, but as we stepped back onto solid ground, the dark nightmare that had greeted me at my front door finally dissolved into the harsh, undeniable light of justice.
