Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the System

The revelation hit me like a physical blow to the chest. A missing woman. An innocent victim used as a prop in my mother’s sick, twisted theatrical production to buy time for their financial escape.
“Where is Olivia, then?” I demanded, slamming my hand onto the steel desk. “If that isn’t her body in the casket, where is my wife?”
“We don't know yet,” Arthur replied grimly, tapping keys on his end of the secure video link. “Local traffic cameras captured your mother’s SUV heading west toward O'Hare International Airport roughly twenty minutes before the marshals arrived at the estate. Ryan was driving. They may have a private charter waiting, or they’re heading toward a secondary safehouse in rural Wisconsin.”
I stared at the screen, my mind racing through every piece of forensic data we had gathered so far. My mother wasn't just a greedy opportunist; she was calculating, methodical, and desperate. But desperation made people sloppy. Desperation left digital footprints.
“Arthur, check the microSD card data I just uploaded to the secure server,” I instructed quickly, leaning close to the mic. “Olivia mentioned a cold-storage crypto wallet and secondary digital ledgers. If they’re fleeing the country, they need liquidity. They can’t move millions in fiat currency through traditional banks anymore because the federal freeze hit every single domestic account tied to Apex Holdings.”
“Got it,” Arthur said. Fingers clicked rapidly on his keyboard. “Scanning the financial logs now... wait. I’m seeing an outbound transaction attempt hitting a decentralized exchange node in the Cayman Islands... timestamped three minutes ago.”
“They’re trying to liquidate the cold-storage wallet right now,” I realized, a grim smile touching the corner of my lips. “They think they're out of reach because they're on the move.”
“Tracing the IP routing... bingo,” Arthur announced triumphantly. “The request is pinging from an upscale private aviation terminal in Rockford, Illinois—seventy miles northwest of Chicago. They’re boarding a Gulfstream G650 registered under a dummy corporation linked to Ryan.”
I stood up instantly, grabbing my suit jacket from the back of the chair. “Send the coordinates of the Rockford airfield to federal marshal command. Have them scramble an intercept unit immediately. I’m heading there myself.”

“Ethan, wait—let the marshals handle it,” Arthur warned. “Your mother and brother are desperate. They’re armed and dangerous.”
“They have my wife, Arthur,” I said, my voice leaving no room for argument. “And they’re about to find out that stealing my money was the second-worst mistake they ever made.”
