Chapter 1 - The Coffin in the Living Room

The coffin stood in the center of my living room before I had even taken off my dress shoes. My suitcase slipped from my hand as I stared at my wife, unable to believe the nightmare unfolding in front of me.

My mother stood beside the coffin with folded hands and dry eyes.

"Olivia didn't make it through childbirth, Ethan."

For several endless seconds, I couldn't breathe.

Then I heard it.

A newborn crying somewhere upstairs.

My heart nearly stopped.

I walked toward the open coffin one slow step at a time. Olivia wore the soft blue dress she had once told me she would wear the day I finally returned from my overseas assignment.

Her skin looked unnaturally pale.

Her dark hair had been arranged with almost unsettling perfection.

The more I looked, the less any of it made sense.

There was no hospital wristband.

No sympathy flowers from the maternity ward.

No discharge paperwork.

No medical records.

Only my mother...

And my younger brother, Ryan...

Watching every move I made as though they were waiting for something.

"Where's my son?" I finally asked.

"He survived," my mother answered without emotion. "Olivia wasn't so fortunate."

Ryan leaned casually against the fireplace, slowly swirling a glass of whiskey.

"She always knew how to make everything complicated."

His words ignited something inside me.

As CEO of one of Chicago's largest investment firms, I had spent years negotiating hostile takeovers, uncovering financial fraud, and reading people long before they opened their mouths. Deception always left traces.

Business lies.

Family lies.

Every lie left evidence.

This room didn't feel like a family mourning a tragedy.

It felt like a carefully staged performance.

Then I noticed Olivia's right hand.

Her fingers were tightly clenched against her side.

"What is she holding?"

For the first time, my mother's composure cracked.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

"Nothing," she answered too quickly. "Let her rest."

I leaned closer.

She grabbed my arm.

"Ethan... don't."

I slowly turned toward her.

"Take your hand off me."

Without another word...

She did.

Olivia's fingers had already stiffened, but not enough to stop me.

Tiny crescent-shaped cuts marked her fingertips, as if she had fought with every ounce of strength to keep her hand closed.

Carefully, I opened each finger.

Something small dropped into my palm.

A black microSD card.

Ryan froze with his whiskey halfway to his lips.

My mother's face turned completely white.

"What is that?" Ryan whispered.

I quietly closed my hand around it.

"You tell me."

My mother forced herself to smile.

"It probably came from her phone. She became paranoid during the pregnancy and recorded everything."

The baby cried again upstairs.

Without saying a word, I slipped the memory card into the hidden compartment inside my wallet—a place no one in my family knew existed.

Months before leaving for my overseas assignment, I had quietly transferred our home into a protected family trust that required only my authorization. After Olivia confessed she believed my mother had been stealing from us, I also gave her access to my encrypted digital evidence vault.

If she died protecting this card...

She wanted me to find it.

I slowly stood and looked directly into my mother's eyes.

"Tell me exactly how Olivia died."

I never looked away.

"Choose your next words very carefully... because they may decide whether you spend the rest of your life as a free woman."
