PART 3 – The Knock at the Door

The doorbell rang once.
Nobody answered.
It rang again.
This time, I opened it.
Two FBI agents stood beside investigators from the Department of Transportation.
"Ms. Walker?"
"Yes."
"We have a federal warrant."
I stepped aside.
Behind me, my mother suddenly found her voice.
"Claire, don't you dare—"
"I already did."
Agent Morales entered first.
He looked directly at Ethan.
"Mr. Walker?"
Ethan tried to smile.
"There must be some misunderstanding."
"There isn't."
Within minutes, computers, phones, filing cabinets, and financial records were being photographed.
One investigator held up a hard drive.
Another carried out several accounting boxes.
Then Agent Morales unfolded a second warrant.
"This one authorizes seizure of all corporate financial records connected to Hawthorne Consulting."
Ethan whispered, "Mom..."
But Patricia—who had always solved problems with money and manipulation—had nothing left to say.
The lies were no longer private.
They had become evidence.

As neighbors gathered outside, federal agents escorted Ethan to their vehicle.
For the first time in his life, he couldn't buy his way out of the truth.
