PART 2 – The Folder They Never Expected

Nobody moved.
My brother Ethan's smile slowly disappeared as I opened the black folder.
"You said you wanted forty thousand dollars," I said quietly. "Instead, let me show you forty-seven pages."
My mother folded her arms.
"We're family, Claire."
"No," I answered. "Family buries their dead together."
I slid the first document across the coffee table.
It wasn't an insurance statement.
It was a bank transfer.
Three hundred and eighty thousand dollars.
From Midland Freight Logistics.
To Hawthorne Consulting.
Owner: Ethan Walker.
My brother's face drained of color.
"You've been spying on me?"
"I've been looking for the people responsible for killing my husband and daughter."
Silence filled the room.
Then I placed down another document.
Maintenance reports.
Forged inspection signatures.
Federal transportation violations.
The truck that crossed the center line should never have been allowed on the road.
Someone had signed paperwork claiming the brakes had been replaced.
They hadn't.
The signature belonged to a mechanic who had died eight months earlier.
Someone had forged everything.
And every payment led back to Hawthorne Consulting.
To Ethan.
My father slowly lowered himself into a chair.
"What... what is this?"
"The beginning."
Outside, a black SUV quietly pulled into my driveway.
I recognized it immediately.
May you like
Federal investigators.
They had arrived exactly on time.
