Chapter 8 - The New Foundation

Two months later, the acquisition was a distant memory.
Apex Financial had filed for bankruptcy, and the story of their downfall was buried on page ten of the financial section.
At Prescott Tower, the culture had changed. The fifty-second floor was no longer a place of frantic, silent desperation. It was a place of collaboration, balance, and quiet confidence.
Jonathan sat in his office, but the door was wide open. Emily sat at her desk, which was no longer tucked away in the shadows but positioned perfectly in the center of the office flow. She was no longer his secretary; she was the Chief of Operations, a role Jonathan had created specifically to ensure no one would ever have the power to exploit her again.
As the sun began to set, casting long, golden shadows across the Chicago skyline, Jonathan walked to the doorway.
"It's five o'clock," he said.
Emily looked up, a smile spreading across her face. "Is that an order, Mr. Prescott?"
Jonathan walked over, his eyes softening as he reached out to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear. The touch was lingering, familiar, and possessive.
"It’s an invitation," he said. "I’ve booked a table for two. No spreadsheets, no legal battles, and no emergencies."
Emily closed her file, stood up, and took his hand. She felt the steady, unburdened rhythm of her life—a life she had reclaimed, a life she had earned, and a life she was finally starting to build with the man who had learned to value her before it was too late.
