Chapter 7 - The Unspoken Shift

The restaurant was small, tucked away in a quiet corner of the city. Jonathan had booked the entire place.
Over a meal that neither of them really tasted, the conversation shifted away from Apex, away from acquisitions, and toward the quiet, aching spaces they had both occupied for too long.
"Why me?" Emily asked, tracing the rim of her glass. "After six years of silence, why did you decide to see me that day in the hospital?"
Jonathan reached across the table, his fingers brushing hers—a hesitant, searching touch. "Because when I caught you, Emily, I realized that I had spent years building a tower of glass, and you were the only thing holding it together. I didn't want the tower anymore. I just wanted to make sure you were okay."
"And if I hadn't collapsed?"

Emily felt the world tilt again, but this time, it was a dizzying, beautiful sensation. She realized that she wasn't just working for Jonathan Prescott; she was living for the moments when he looked at her like she was the only person in the room.
