The following week at Prescott Tower was not about business; it was about demolition.
Jonathan and Emily worked in perfect synchronization, a two-person powerhouse. While Jonathan used his influence to isolate Apex Financial from the city’s banking circle, Emily worked with the legal team to weaponize the ledger she had kept for years.
She knew where the bodies were buried because she had been the one to file the death certificates.
"They’re calling," Emily said on Wednesday morning, holding up the desk phone. "It’s their CEO, pleading for a meeting."
Jonathan walked out of his office, his sleeves rolled up, looking like a man who had finally found a cause worth fighting for. "Tell him I’m busy. Tell him I’m having lunch."
"Lunch?" Emily smiled. "But the office policy—"

"I’m taking you to lunch," Jonathan said, stepping into her space, his voice dropping to a low, intimate register. "Somewhere outside this tower. Somewhere with no spreadsheets."
The thrill that ran through Emily was not professional. It was deeply, undeniably personal. They left the office together, leaving the corporate world to panic in their wake, and for the first time in six years, they walked down Michigan Avenue as two people who had absolutely nothing to prove.
