Chapter 4 - The Tower of Judgment

The transition from the freezing, muddy streets of the district to the fifty-second-floor executive suite of Vance Tower felt like entering another dimension.

Monica stood in the center of a vast, glass-walled boardroom, clutching little Leo tightly against her chest. Emily and Grace clung to either side of her coat, their eyes wide with awe and apprehension as they stared at the polished marble floors and panoramic views of Manhattan.

The heavy mahogany double doors at the end of the room swung open.

Arthur Vance walked in. He looked older and more weathered than he did in his television broadcasts, but the commanding aura around him was absolute. Behind him walked Marcus and four private security guards.

Arthur stopped a few feet away, his gaze darting immediately to the small bundle wrapped in Monica’s coat. He reached out a trembling hand, pulling back the edge of the blanket just enough to reveal Leo’s sleeping face.

For a long, agonizing moment, absolute silence filled the room.

The fierce, hard lines of Arthur’s face softened, the heavy weight of grief and lost years lifting from his shoulders as he recognized the exact features of his son.

"My grandson," Arthur breathed, a tear slipping down his weathered cheek. He looked up, his piercing eyes locking onto Monica. "You... you found him. Where?"

"My daughters found him, Mr. Vance," Monica said, her voice steady despite the overwhelming pressure in the room. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the platinum identification bracelet, placing it gently on the edge of the mahogany table. "Behind a supermarket dumpster. Cold, shivering, and left for dead."

Arthur looked at the bracelet, then down at Emily and Grace, who bravely stared back at him without flinching.

"You saved his life," Arthur said, his voice thick with emotion. He turned to Marcus. "Draft the transfer papers immediately. Secure a trust fund for these two young ladies that will ensure they never have to scavenge another day in their lives. And buy them a home—a real home, with walls that keep out the rain."

"Mr. Vance," Monica interrupted quietly, stepping forward.

Arthur blinked, surprised. "Is the compensation not enough? Name your price, Mrs.—"

"Monica," she supplied softly. "And no, Mr. Vance. We didn't bring him here for money."

She looked down at Leo, who stirred slightly in her arms, letting out a tiny, contented sigh before opening his dark, beautiful eyes.

"We brought him here because he belongs with his family," Monica continued, her voice trembling slightly as she gently transferred the baby into Arthur's waiting, trembling arms. "Just like my girls belong with me. Money can't buy a home, Mr. Vance. Love does that."

Arthur cradled his grandson against his chest, tears openly falling down his face as he looked at the ordinary, impoverished woman who possessed a wealth of spirit and integrity that his entire corporate empire could never replicate.
